So, there's a new Sonic Sticker Book out in the UK..

If you regular any of the Sonic fan sites you will have heard about this. It actually took me a while to track one down from a WHSmith because it turns out the stores all keep them behind the till because they reckon kids will steal them. Doesn't explain the piles and piles of football stickers all over the stores, but whatever. Basically if you're in the UK still looking for one ask at the till. Not in the UK? Ebay's your best bet.

(Left) 1994 Album (Right) 2010 Album. Like you needed to be told that.

But is the album even any good? I've only just bought one and some stickers today but we'll have a quick look, and unfairly compare it to an almost complete 1994 Sonic sticker book after the jump.

Well inflation has certainly made a difference which is no surprise. The old album cost a mere 60p whereas the newer, smaller and thinner new album is £2. The packs of 5 stickers are 50p so it'd cost about £14 to fill up the album if you got no doubles (hahaha, like that would ever happen). Out of the 10 packs i bought I only got 4 doubles though and they do have an order service to buy specific stickers you're after so that's something.

To be fair this new album isn't made for cranky Sonic 90's fans like a lot of us here. If you're not a fan of modern Sonic and his 'shitty friends' this won't be you're cup of tea. The entire collection consists of artwork and renders of all the characters, who get a page or two dedicated to them each. Yes, even those Sonic Riders bird things get a page, and Big the Cat gets a whole page of stickers whereas metal Sonic has.... 1 sticker. Booo!

I'll never get my head around who thought it was a good idea to name a character 'Eggman Nega'

Every character has their own little bio, some with pointless info like their age height and weight, and some of the writing is enough to make me wanna hurl. "Amy adores Sonic but seems to be more in love with love itself"? "Deep down Eggman feels admiration and respect for Sonic"? Oh please. They do mention 'Sonic Adventure for the Sega Dreamcast' in one bit though.

I can't help but feel while kids will be happy collecting this and some fans are going nuts over the fact that some of the art and renders are brand new, they could of done a lot more with this when you compare it to the old book. Sure the old album is mostly full of Sonic 3 screenshots and it's probably mostly nostalgia speaking here, but it just has a more colourful and fun layout and there's a bit more variety. It's bigger, and has a fold out poster to fill with shiny stickers, and there was even some daft puzzle stuff at the back.

Look! Even a few pages dedicated to a AOSTH cartoon!

What I'm saying is along with the character art, why not some screenshots from some of the games, or animation frames from Night of the Werehog? Would of made it a bit more interesting in my opinion. Still, I'm just picking this apart, it's not a bad album by any means, and Sonic collectors will get a kick out of it. Hell, I'm probably gonna have a go at filling this album up just for the dumb pleasure of collecting stickers again for the first time in...16 years? Wow, that's crazy.

One last thing: at the back of the album there's an advert for all the Jazware Sonic toys from America launching in the UK via Tomy (who have grabbed the Sonic license for the first time again since back in the early 90s) sometime in June. The more you know!

Oh yeah and a new Sonic game was announced today. How about that?

Sonic Watches: Time To Be Cool!

Direct from the parents comes another Sonic item found in the dark recesses of my old bedroom. Last time I showcased a box full of goodies, this time I only have a watch to share, but what a cool watch it is!

Still sealed in its package, this item dates back to 1994 and was manufactured by Innovative Time Corp. Like most kids watches of the day, the face features a fat hunk of plastic that flips open to reveal a simple digital face. The package itself features a rather wonky image of Sonic. Ignore the face and look at the body, since when did Sonic have such fatty forearms?

As seen above, the watch cover is a rather cool 3D representation of the classic Sonic pose, gotta love that checkerboard background.

Above Sonic is an absolutely insane Robotnik. Seriously, the guy is well beyond the realm of "I hate that Hedgehog".

Below is Tails, who also seems rather annoyed at our hero. Perhaps Sonic did something so heinous that both Robotnik AND Tails have reason to be displeased.

The back of the package, seen above, reveals that there are at least two more watches to be had. I know for a fact that I have the one on the left. The one on the right can be seen on the front of the package in a detail view. I've found an image of the watch on the left, courtesy of Sonic Gear. It also seems that Sonic Gear doesn't know too much about these watches. Guess I'll have to clue them in by sending a link to this post. Hi guys! Hope this helps!

I've been blogging for 4 years now!

On Monday it will have been 4 years since I first started blogging in this blog, my England, Thailand and Other Things blog and my WordPress blog.

The statistics show that to date I have posted a total of exactly 320 entries across the three blogs, giving an average of 80 posts per year, or approximately 1.5 per week.

Here are my personal favourite posts (with the most recent ones first):

In this blog:

In the England, Thailand and Other Things blog:

There are free Flash online games, free wallpaper backgrounds and graphics, free game downloads and much more in amongst all that lot, so there should be something for everyone, lol! :-)

Ebay hunt: Early 90's Sonic UFO Catcher

Thought I'd start preserving photos of really nice Sega related things I've seen come and go on Ebay from time to time before the auction vanishes from the site. Recently I stumbled upon this beauty with a starting bid of £100. it sold last week for about £206, which is not a lot of money for a full scale arcade machine you'd never normally find in the UK. Had i been working on my dream of having my own personal arcade I would have been fighting for this, but alas that's a project I'd probably have to save for when I'm going through my mid life crisis many years from now.

You may remember Smindas showed some photos of one of these that he saw on his trip to Japan, and UK:Resistance posted a video of it playing the Starlight Hill Zone music once too. According to the seller this one has only been used for corporate events, so it hasn't been rotting in some dingy arcade where kids have spilled coke on it, but rather business men have been spilling wine on it instead. What would you fill it up with? If I was feeling really spiteful I'd stick piles of copies of Panzer Dragoon Saga in it, except in the case would be four copies of Shadow the Hedgehog instead.

We can excuse it being pink when the artwork is so wonderfully retro, before even Tails was on the scene and they had to resort to highlighting the little animal friends. I especially like the bunny riding a balloon. I always found it funny how all this early stuff was named 'SegaSonic' as one word. Imagine if we had 'NintendoMario' or 'DisneyMickey'. Neither of those are quite as catchy mind.

This is the least exciting photo. The machine is currently filled with bin bags and green capsules. Hopefully whoever won it will sit it next to a After Burner Deluxe cabinet so whenever the Starlight Hill music isn't playing, there is still some joyous Sega sounds playing. In fact if the winner is reading this get in contact with us and maybe send us some not-rubbish-sized photos!

Further to my posts earlier this year about the two most eagerly awaited video games of 2010, Super Mario Galaxy 2 and Sonic the Hedgehog 4, here are the latest updates about them, including release dates:

Super Mario Galaxy 2 is now complete and is due for release on the Nintendo Wii on the following dates: North America - May 23, Japan - May 27, Australasia - June 10, Europe - June 11.

Sonic the Hedgehog 4 (previously known as Project Needlemouse) is going to be an episodic series, and Episode 1 is due for release via the PlayStation Network, the Xbox Live Arcade and WiiWare in the summer. The actual release date is still to be confirmed because the game is still undergoing development.

Shenmonth: Shenhua Promo Figure

For those who don't follow all of the Sega Network blogs (you should, they're all awesome!), I recently kicked off a month long celebration of 'Shenmue' called Shenmonth. Catchy or stupid name: you be the judge. As a part of Shenmonth, I wanted to show off a recent aquisition of mine. The Shenmue Shenhua promo figure!

The statue was a promotional item to celebrate the release of 'Shenmue' in Japan, though I know very little outside of that. How one got the item and why it is copyrighted "1998" while 'Shenmue' was released in December 1999 are two things I do not know. Perhaps a reader or the Grand Gagaman himself could shed some light on the figure's history.

I shall come from a far eastern land, shipped airmail

Like the recently released Ryo Hazuki forklift figure, the paint job isn't the figure's strong suit. Then again, it was a freebie so beggars can't be choosers. I picked the figure up for $10 so I'm not going to complain. The material is a very light, hollow vinyl. One flick and the figure could tumble over.

I assume this says "Shenhua" or "Shen Hua" or "Shen Fa".

An interesting note: the only two 'Shenmue' figures made available were promo items and are difficult to come by. Perhaps Sega needs to get on the ball and give us our Comb-My-Hair Goro with Harbor Playset™.
All the 'Shenmue' goodies I own (the XBOX 'Shenmue II' not pictured)

To complete this post, I present an EXCLUSIVE screenshot from 'Shenmue III'!!!
Ryo: Are you certain this is what I do to defeat Lan Di?
Shenhua: Yes Ryo, the prophesy clearly states that this is how it is done.
Ryo: I see.

Sega Anime: Panzer Dragoon

So back in my teens I found out about the video 'Sonic: The Movie' being released here, which turned out to be a dub of the anime that I remember clips of from Sonic Jam on the Saturn. Soon after buying that I started to pick up lot of anime videos (yes, DVDs were about but VHS was still the most common format), and in my search for just about anything anime (most of which were rubbish but hilarious) I stumbled across another Sega game turned one-off anime: Panzer Dragoon.

Now safe to say I didn't keep hold of any of the videos I picked up if I didn't like them and unfortunately Panzer Dragoon was one of them: this was not a very good adaptation of the games, or even a great anime in it's own right. The animation is quite cheap looking; I suspect a majority of the budget went towards the now dreadfully out dated looking 3D backdrops that clash with the bland hand drawn characters (the girl in this in particular looks rather lifeless).

I mean I've seen much worse, but really this is something of a missed opportunity. A lot of what made Panzer Dragoon such a unique looking universe in the games is lacking here. It probably doesn't help that the dub is so awful that it only makes it unintentionally funny, and even the music misses the mark compared to unique sounds of the games. At least they drew the dragon accurate to the first game I guess. A shame a bigger budget animated feature wasn't made of Panzer instead of this half baked effort, but in case you're a fan of PD and have never seen this it has been uploaded to Youtube. Unlike 'Sonic: The Movie' ADV never released a DVD of this as far as I am aware but if you really do want to own this I don't think the VHS is too expensive or rare to find.
