Decided to have a quick peek at Impact Innovations website to see if their Sonic page was still just a placeholder, and it appears they have completely updated it with the plush toys that are available to date, as well as bunch of new stuff, although a lot of them appear to be concept art at the moment, which is a relief as otherwise they would be rather ugly, some of them. They have Excel files with details on each product with additional images which I'll post here.
These, I take it, are early versions of the plush toys, as they look quite a bit different, especially the Sonic one.
many more after the jump.
Concept art for Sonic and tails radio controlled cars, much like the Mario kart ones they did a while back. The design of Sonic one is a tad odd as Sonic is in a running pose, but has a par of wheels attached inbetween his legs, and he has little wheels on his shoes, which based on the pose means he has a wheel on the top of one of them.
These concept models are pretty ugly. Tails is riding a surfboard on the artwork but this model just has him in a stand pose, which makes no sense. These are early development pictures though, so I will give them the benefit of the doubt and presume they'll be much better quality when finally released.
Next is a Slot car track set, again much like a Mario Kart set they did some time ago, only this time with a loop and rings drawn onto the track, which is a nice touch. The Tails toy for this one makes more sense as it's in a running pose. This one has a watermark on it saying "unapproved design" so maybe we won't even get to see this one. Maybe the health and safety farts though toys flying around a loop would be too dangerous, or maybe it's just because Impact's slot cat toys are a bit shite, if the Mario Kart ones are to go by. Those thing were being returned to marks & Sparks by the dozens over Christmas because most of them didn't work.
There's another Race track design here which may be a replacement for the one above, but is generally a lot less inventive, using a basic black track that just goes around and has no rings or loops, so is very un-Sonic like. This could be just a quick mock up, mind. You know what these racing sets really need? A Dr. Robotnik in his egg-o-matic whizzing about. Now that's a toy I would love to see.
Now this is a quick concept model if ever I saw one. They've literally taken one of those ugly Sonic X figures and shoved a webcam through his stomach. It gets the idea across, but the final product shouldn't look anything like this as this is the CLASSIC Sonic the Hedgehog range we're talking about here.
Finally, some rather interesting USB stick things, which come in 2GB and 4GB and seem to be based directly on the same designs of those viynl toys First4Figures are putting out. I can't see them having much partical use (try pluggin that into the side of your PC with a lumpy figure hanging off it) unless the USB cable pulls away from the figure part.
Still, it's nice to see this classic style range going full steam ahead, so people don't forget when Sonic was not trying too hard to be "extheeeeeme" and surrounded by a million pointless characters.

The Itty Bitty NiGHTS Toy from Japan
When that new NiGHTS game came out for the Wii in Japan last December, many of the first copies came with a little NiGHTS toy as a bonus of some sort (as seen in the commercial above). When the game popped up over here however, we weren't treated to this little extra gift, much in the same way that we don't get a lot of things Japan does, like expensive box sets for anime games full of spoons and pillows. If you look around on Ebay for long enough, however, you may just come across one of these little figures separate from the game. Considering I only paid £20 for the game itself, paying £11 for the toy didn't seem like too bad a deal. They weren't kidding about it being small though, but with the amount of shelf space I have left maybe that's not such a bad thing.
The toy has been designed by besidegames as part of their PaPETCH range of little figures all based around the same template (in fact, it appears to be the first one released) and ever since this NiGHTS design it looks like video game companies have been jumping at the chance of having their characters re-created in tiny figure forms. Have a look at their line up and you'll see characters from Exit, the Kunio series and Hammerin' Harry. They also show artwork of a Reala toy, although it's hard to tell if that one has been released or how you could get it, though. maybe it's a special one you only get in the box if you're lucky (if someone could translate the text in red under Reala, that would be great as it could explain).
So not a lot can really be said about the toy, really. It's about 6cm tall, made of some kind of vinyl and comes with a little plastic stand so it doesn't topple over from it's large head. It's obviously a simplified version of the character's design but still a good likeness.
But what did I think of the game? Well, at first, it doesn't give off the best of first impressions. The FMV scene is the usual top north stuff we've come to expect from Sega games, but the in game cut scenes run at a low frame rate, look washed out and features voice acting that seems to be mostly done by one very annoying voice actor/actress. At least Reala and Wiseman's voices do their job well enough, but story scenes are really quite embarrassing to sit through and on the first run unskippable. Even the cut scenes from Sonic Adventure were a bit more bearable. Much like those 3D Sonic games, they also make you play away from the main fun of the game sometimes, with tedious missions and clunky exploring levels where you play as the children.
The main stages and bosses, however, are great. The visuals for some reason looks far better than the rest of the game here, as if all the extra stuff was thrown in near the end of production, and the game play is just like the original, if you ignore the fact that they changed the aim of each lap a bit. One thing that also bugged me at first were the Wii remote controls: the remote pointer is a joke and completely broken, and the Nunchuck mode doesn't quite feel right either because the analouge stick isn't quite up to the accurately needed for flying in circles, but once I had a go at using the Gamecube controller I never turned back.
As I got further into the game I found myself warming up to it, and the final stage and boss redeemed the whole game for me, and there was more beautifully animated FMV scenes to boot. I'm rambling on here but if you decide to buy this game and get put off by the start keep at it, as it gets progressively better and once you have completed the story you can go back to beat your scores (without having to see those cut scenes again), as well as have a go at the online racing mode, which is pretty limited but a nice addition. It's not the perfect sequel, but it's defiantly one of Sega's better games in recent memory. At least it was more fun than Sonic and the Secret Rings which almost drove me to drink from frustration. If you liked the Saturn game and can excuse some imperfections, get it. If you didn't play the original...play that first.

Super Smash Bros. Brawl is released on Wii in North America today!
It's here at last, the first English-language version of "Super Smash Bros. Brawl" is released in the U.S. and Canada today - Hoorah! I hope it stomps all over the competition console games! I'm sure it will - it was released in Japan on January 31st and is selling like the proverbial hot cakes over there. :-)
One slight downer in this time of great happiness though... release dates for the game in Europe and Australasia are still, even now, to be confirmed. Come on Nintendo, sort it out!!
If you can't play it yet for whatever reason, don't worry too much - here is a brilliant Flash online version that you can play for free in the meantime:

Boot Sale Season Returns: Megadrive Goldmine
The big car boots sales a short drive away finally started up again recently, and I went today after months of desperately trying to find bargains on Ebay. Anyone who knows me well enough will know of my jammy-git luck with finding some crazy cheap gaming stuff at them, like a game Boy Advance for £1, a Playstation 2 Slim with 16 games for £55 and my Sega Multi-Mega which set me back a measly £6.50, but these kinds of things very rarely happen, between week after week of the same old common shit (Read: Sports games. Anyone would think no ones buys anything else at these places). Oh how I have missed them for awesome shit like this raid I got today..
This was literally sitting on top of the box when I first glanced over, which me me run over towards it. I asked him how much the games in the box were. His answer? "The whole box is a tenner, mate."
Yes, £10. There was a total of 30 items in the box, making them cost about 33p each. Yes, I shat my pants. Not literally of course. The Mega Drive games I found today didn't even end there. On Sunday's I generally go to around 2 or 3 boot sales that are all on pretty near to each other, and I managed to find some more that were not the usual shite:
Here's Alien Soldier running on my HD telly. Oh how good does this game feel to play on something other than a emulator. The beautiful music booming out of the telly for the first time made my jaw drop. I still utterly suck at this game, though; I always die at that snake boss thingy. Odd thing I noticed about the PAL version: the engrish seems to have been cleaned up. The intro actually makes a bit of sense now, and "Visualshock! Speedshock! Soundshock! Now is the time for 6800 Heart on Fire!" was missing from the title screen. Oh well.
Here's a big blue box full of Mega Drive junk I bought today. What's in it, then?Find out after the jump!
A rather dusty Mega Drive Mark 1, some dodgy third party controllers (One with a dead Up button), but best of all, an official six button controller and 26 games!
Not the usual Fifa rubbish I always normally find though, but quite a lot of unusual games that I have honestly never seen in the flesh...er..plastic before. Marzin Wars, Bio Hazard Battle, Dragon's Revenge, and a game I had never even heard of (not even when playing heaps of emulation) called Cyborg Justice, to name a few.

The highlight of the collection was cropped out of that last picture on purpose though...
ALIEN FOOKIN SOLDIER.

Been looking about for these three for a while (I tend to avoid buying MD games from Ebay). Cost me £5 for the three, which seemed pretty high compared to that previous miracle, but Psycho Pinball was pretty darn mint with a cardboard sleeve over it, and I miss that good ol' Aquatic Games (the music from it has been stuck in my heads for years).
Then at another boot sale I got this lot. Ecco 2 cost 50p, and the others cost 20p. Digitized Micheal Jackson screeches for 20p. How could I resist? I also bought a PS2 GBA game for £4 each, but that is NOT TEH SEGA. They were Midway Arcade Treasures 1 and Super Mario Bros 3, by the way.

I'm not making a big deal over finally finding a copy of this game!

A Mario Online Game Recommendation
A bit of a change from my previous online game recommendations now (click here to read the last one)... with just one Super Mario Flash game for you to try out this time, which I hope will prove entertaining and challenging enough on its own:
Super Mario Bros.: Paper Mario World (W1)
This is the second game sponsored by my www.mariosonicgames.com site (see also Sonic the Hedgehog: Amy's Whack-A-Nik, which was the first game sponsored by my site).
It is World 1 of a pair of games (World 2 is currently undergoing development) partly based on Super Paper Mario, but primarily being original games in their own right. It is a very tough challenge to complete the game, but hopefully you're up to that challenge and will find it enjoyable along the way. :-)
You get to take Paper Mario on a journey through lots of mini-levels, complete with his trusty hammer which you can use to whack Goombas and the like. You can also jump on them in the usual Mario fashion if you prefer - but me, I like squishing them with the hammer best! :-) Enjoy!
